Wilson Deng: FASS' newest president
He's the man.
PROFILE by Ong Jia Yong
He converted to Christianity despite coming from a family of staunch Buddhists and he is planning to pursue a dynamic career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a diplomat despite his dislike for change. This is a guy who marches to the beat of his own drum. This is the FASS Club’s 32nd Executive Committee President, Wilson Deng. When asked why he would make such a paradoxical career choice, he paused for a moment and replied, “I feel that it would be a good challenge, forcing myself to develop as a person despite my not liking of change around me.”
Wilson is a third year political science major and is not without ample experience with the club itself having served as Honorary General Secretary all last year. When asked why he wanted to run for president, he simply replied, “If I wasn’t president, I just wouldn’t be able to impact the direction of the club as much.” Spoken like a true natural leader, he has been in leadership positions all his life in organizations such as the National Police Cadet Corps.
His unorthodox way of looking at things and leadership qualities should serve him well as he tries to tackle various problems of the FASS club. Problems such as the low student participation rate on the issue of student leadership as seen in the low amount of votes during this past election and claims that the faculty is no longer as relevant as before.
Amidst the issues plaguing the club, he remains positive and upbeat, saying that the “image of the club is improving” and that under his stewardship he is “hoping to continue that” while citing that the club is “more responsive than going to the respective subject departments because the club is run by people who really know what is going on (with the students) at ground level.”
