One year is all it takes to make a difference.
Ang Yu Qian has been elected as the new president of the 33rd National University of Singapore Students’ Union (NUSSU) council from losing by nine votes last year to securing almost all the votes this year.
The decision came after two hours of deliberation at the 33r d NUSSU council meeting held on Saturday.
Unlike last year, there was no contest for the top post this time round.
But the 24-year-old’s popularity was clearly evident this time round.
The former NUSSU vice-president won over the majority of the voting council, securing 46 votes out of 50.
Michelle Tan Yi Ling, former Publications Secretary from NUSSU Exco, said that Ang’s win came as no surprise.
After all, the fourth year arts faculty student boasts a wealth of experience, having served in NUSSU for three years.
“I expected Yu Qian to be elected as president because he has a strong background, having assumed various roles in clubs and NUSSU. He has a diversified portfolio,” said Tan.
“As a close friend of Yu Qian, I know that he is credible and is someone who puts his words to actions. I am confident that he will lead the exco team well,” she added.
In his speech to the council, Ang took the opportunity to highlight three key goals if he were to become President.
They were to safeguard and uphold student welfare, strengthen the union, and improve student life.
That means, making sure NUS is “not just a mugging area.”
Ang’s aspirations seem to have gone down well with students so far.
Wee Shi Cheng, a FASS student commented, “Looking at these goals, I think Yu Qian is very ambitious. However, he has taken into consideration several factors and is more informed as compared to last year. I have a lot of faith in him.”
Also on Ang’s agenda are plans to look into faculty-specific academic issues, campus transport and the general wellness of students.
He also stressed the need for a larger focus on two groups of students, namely the needy students and the international students.
In order to achieve these goals, Ang emphasized, “Teamwork is the key.”
Soh Xiang Jun, president of Sports Club, said, “I am looking forward to see how Yu Qian will lead the exco and fulfil the three goals this coming academic year.”
