1 September 2011
Tension amongst the recently elected members of the 32nd FASS Club’s Executive Committee led to two withdrawals in a recent student meeting that decided the internal positions for the faculty club.
Phua Dai Ling, Sylvia (Year 1), cited personal reasons for her withdrawal from the committee. More interestingly, Ooi Teck Chau (year 2, Political Science) withdrew from the committee due to “irreconcilable differences” between him and the rest of the newly elected executive committee. He declined to comment further on this matter.
Among the positions filled during this meeting was the position of FASS Club President, which was uncontested and awarded to Wilson Deng, a year 3 Political Science major. The vice president position was then handed to Seah Wang Ling, a year 2 Psychology major. Seven other positions were filled up such as the Honorary General Secretary and the Freshmen Orientation Chairperson.
However, the position of Sports Secretary still has not been filled and the committee will take interim measures to see out the duties of this post until it is filled.
These internal elections were very thorough in nature and in spite of the lack of competition for most positions, the elections lasted over two days and the minutes for the meeting spanned 58 pages in Microsoft Word.
In the end, only four positions were contested during these elections: vice president, Freshmen Orientation Programme Chairperson, Student Welfare Secretary, and Director of Logistics. The position of Director of Internal Marketing was uncontested but still went through two rounds of voting. The position most contested for was the Freshmen Orientation Programme Chairperson, with three people contesting for the spot.
