Chockfull of surprises
Claudio Chock
PROFILE by Lydianne Yap
Precision. It is the one thing that ties every facet of Claudio Chock’s life together. Being a writer, DJ and computer programmer, precision is the glue that holds his life together.
The twenty-three-year-old who once suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder admits to being a chronic perfectionist. “I am particular about everything,” he says. “I have to make sure that every detail, every alignment is exactly as it should be. It has to be precise.”
This, of course, comes in handy for the avid programmer. “Customisation and programming is my primary passion,” says the affable young man. “I write mainly jailbreak and customisation scripts for Apple products.” Sure enough, his iPhone’s interface looks nothing like the typical Apple one. It has app icons rolling off the screen like dice and a fully customised home screen. “It’s my hobby!” he says with an impish grin.
Assigned to the technology beat during his internship at Singapore Press Holdings, Chock dealt largely with product reviews and the technical helpdesk column in Digital Life. He has since resumed his full-time studies at the National University of Singapore as a third year Sociology major, and has taken to writing for DL on a freelance basis.
However, going into journalism full-time upon graduation is not on the cards for this writer. “I am more interested in nightlife management and events,” the resident Mambo Prince of popular nightspot, Zouk, says. With this title under his belt, Chock is a minor celebrity of sorts among the party-going crowd.
Truly a jack-of-all-trades, Chock occasionally spins the tables as DJ CHOCKolate as well. His last event was NUS Project X 2011.
Tall, well built and immaculately dressed, Chock reckons that he is among the new breed of Singaporean men– the Sensitive New Age Guy. “I don't do the typical guy thing and go out, drink beer and well, be a dude,” he notes with a laugh. “I like to do stuff that other guys don't. I enjoy watching Korean dramas and chick flicks, or curling up with a good romance novel.”
The self-confessed romantic almost flew his then-girlfriend and himself up to Paris on a whim a year ago when their relationship was on the rocks. “She always wanted to see the Eiffel Tower,” he explains.
At the end of the day, what really drives Chock is passion. “Money can only solve 99% of the problems in life,” he reflects. “The remaining 1% is all about heart.”
