Animal Day @ 313
BREAKING STORY by Lydianne Yap
Over the weekend of 8th and 9th October, $15,000 was raised for six animal beneficiaries through Animal Day @ 313. The first event of its kind in Singapore, Animal Day @ 313 was helmed by Deon Toh, 24, a third year NUS Communications and New Media student– also the events and public relations director for Thunder Rock School.
The two-day music cum animal awareness festival was organised by Thunder Rock School in celebration of World Animal Day. 313@somerset acted as venue sponsors for the event.
Emceed by Esther Low, lead vocalist of one of the featured bands, Monster Cat, the place was abuzz with activity. A mini-stage was set up along the Discovery Walk of 313@somerset, and stalls promoting various animal causes lined the walkway. Animal lovers trickled in with their pets in tow– from tiny Burberry clad Chihuahuas to three-legged Golden Retrievers.
“This non-profit event is targeted at marrying musicians, animal organisations and artists, so as to create more buzz and awareness for animals in need,” said Amanda Ling, Principal of Thunder Rock School and former Electrico member.
“We hope to get the fans of all the bands here to contribute to the animal charities as well,” added Ian Toh, 26, also Principal of Thunder Rock School and a former History major in NUS. 9 local acts were invited as performers over the two-day event– the more notable ones being Caracal, Nick Chim, 53A, Flybar and Monster Cat.
Three local artists– two freelance artists, CLOGTWO and MAHLSTIK, and a third year NTU Art Design and Media major, Cheryl Lim– worked to produce six different art pieces, each representing an animal charity beneficiary. These pieces were exhibited at the event and interested members of the public placed silent bids with Thunder Rock School. All proceeds from the sale of paintings are to be distributed to the respective charities.
The six animal charity beneficiaries are ACRES, Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD), Cat Welfare Society, Mutts and Mittens, The House Rabbit Society of Singapore and Animal Lovers League.
“The turnout was a lot better than we expected, seeing as to how this is the inaugural Animal Day celebration in Singapore,” said Deon Toh.
“We aim to organize something on a bigger scale next year, hopefully with even greater results.”
